The Problems Associated With Problem Drinking
Alcoholism is a common problem faced by both men and women. It was found out that in the United States alone, about 17.6 million Americans are said to be alcoholics and face alcohol problems. The effects and impacts of alcohol abuse are becoming widespread, and these have been posing threats to safety, health, and economic productivity. In worst cases, deaths have been recorded due to drunk driving. Alcoholism has become a hot topic these days, and this involves many individuals from different walks of life.
What is Alcoholism
Alcoholism is a type of disease that is characterized by four primary features namely craving, loss of control, physical dependence, and tolerance. Craving is said to be manifested when there is an intense need or urge to drink. Loss of control pertains to the inability to stop drinking as soon as individuals have started the habit. Alcoholism is also being tied up with physical dependence, and this feature pertains to withdrawal symptoms like sweating, nausea, and shakiness after alcohol drinking.
In these present scenario, alcohol problems are both experienced by men and women. In the case of men, about 62% of male Americans have been drinking for the past 30 days. About 47% of drinkers have also reported that they have been into binge drinking in the last 30 days. It was also found out that 12.5 episodes of binge drinking episodes are observed per year and 17% is expected to become alcohol dependents within their lives.
In the case of women in the US, 5.3 million revealed that alcohol drinking threatens their safety and health. Ninth grade young girls have been reported to engage into drinking and 37% of them have been drinking for months now. About 17% have also been into binge drinking and 8% of these girls are alcohol dependents. Studies revealed that women drinking alcohol are more likely to suffer from liver inflammation or liver hepatitis. Same goes in the case of men, and worst these conditions triggers the development of cirrhosis of the liver.
Risks of Addiction
Drinking has also been a common practice observed in the different sectors including the military. Members of the military have been into alcohol drinking. Some of them are heavy drinkers and others are occasional drinkers. Intense alcohol use has been observed in the military and members have their own distinct reasons why they drink. Some military members acclaimed that they drink alcohol as a means of self meditation.
Young military men aging 18 to 25 years old are said to be more using alcohol excessively and prevalently. It was even revealed that the rate for heavy alcohol drinkers in the niche of young military is twice the rate of the civilian counterparts. Drinking issues and driving has also been emerging and based on reports, about 10,839 individuals die because of accidents including drunk driving incident. One in every three person will be engaged into alcohol-related accident in some instances of their lives. Youths and teens have also been into this issue and most of them have fall in the categories of heavy drinkers and binge drinkers.
